What is Homeschooling?
Homeschooling involves parents and/or hired instructors as teachers within the home instead of enrolling children in a public or private school. It takes hard work, patience, and responsibility to home school.
Reasons why parents choose to homeschool:
- Religion
- Special needs/disability
- School does not challenge child to his/her full potential
- Bullying
- Transportation/convenience
- Family travel
Things to Consider:
- Homeschoolers normally score higher on examination/standardized tests (ACT and SAT) for the following reasons:
a) Special needs are addressed
b) Students have advanced communication skills
c) Schooling is focused on knowledge rather than grades
d) Safe learning environments
e) Independent thinking is fostered - Family dynamics may help or hinder the learning experience
- Parents need to MAKE the time (Example – desire to work)
- Parents have the ability to control every aspect of their children’s lives
- Some parents lack the education or resources to home school effectively
- It can be difficult to make friends if there are no groups or organizations nearby
Helpful Websites:
If my parents chose to home school me, I don’t think I would like it because I am unable to get along well with some of my family members, wouldn’t have any friends/classmates to play with, and am easily distracted by the television in my home. To be honest, I would rather go to public or private school rather than be homeschooled. Though my opinion about homeschooling differentiates from many others, there are great support groups like NHEG to be a resource to homeschooled families. There are many choices out there for child education; homeschooling is just one of them.
