The word ‘wolf’ brings up images of a massive grey and white canid, prowling the forests and tundra of such states as Michigan, Wyoming, and Alaska, just to name a few. This subspecies of wolf is well-known. It’s the one heard about in fairytales, seen on documentaries and in books. But the grey wolf is only one of many subspecies of wolves which roam the United States.

One such subspecies is the Mexican grey wolf, typically seen in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Known as ‘el lobo’, this wolf can be found primarily in the states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas, as well as in parts of Mexico. The Mexican grey wolf is smaller than its cousins to the north, standing at only 25-32 inches tall. Its coat is a mixture of grey, buff, rust and black, and they can have very distinctive markings. They have long legs and can run up to 40 miles (65KM) an hour.

As previously mentioned, these wolves reside in the mountainous regions of the southwestern United States, as well as Mexico. They live and hunt in a pack, with a complex social structure consisting of a mated pair of alpha wolves and their offspring. In captivity, Mexican grey wolves can live up to fifteen years. It is estimated that they live roughly ten years in the wild.

Biodiversity continues to be an issue, as today’s population is descended from only five wolves: four males and one pregnant female. In the years between 1977 and 1980, these wolves were bred as the basis for a new generation. Although this saved the species from extinction, it provided conservationists with a limited gene pool.

Currently, there are 196 Mexican grey wolves in the wild. It is estimated that over a thousand Mexican wolves roamed the southwest during the 1900’s, but the population has since been decimated by human predation. Due to increasingly low numbers of elk, mule deer, and other prey in the wild, wolves have been forced to find food elsewhere, typically on cattle ranches. From the early twentieth century until 1976 (when the Mexican wolf was declared to be an endangered species), they were shot or poisoned either by private individuals protecting their cattle or by government agents, in accordance with legislation current at the time.

In the 1970’s, the Mexican grey wolf was considered extinct in the wild, and a binational conservation effort began. By breeding the wolves in captivity, zoologists were able to release a small population of Mexican grey wolves back into their natural habitat. This population continues to grow, but slowly. Conservation efforts continue, with new legislation being introduced as recently as 2022. With the right resources and patience, the number of Mexican grey wolves will continue to grow.

The post Endangered: The Mexican Grey Wolf first appeared on New Heights Educational Group, Inc..

The post Endangered: The Mexican Grey Wolf appeared first on New Heights Educational Group, Inc..

CollegeXpress has partnered with colleges and universities for over 30 years. Their mission is to help students find the right schools and schools find the right students. CollegeXpress provides the most comprehensive college search resources, from the traditional college and scholarship searches to content from students, college administrators, faculty and more; expert advice, and lists and rankings. They are the one-stop shop for students starting their college search. The website is free for students and parents, and CollegeXpress does not sell students’ information.
Pamela Clark, Executive Director of NHEG, stated, “CollegeXpress works with 360+ colleges and universities to help them find students. NHEG offers its own database of scholarships and college information and is working to create a searchable database in the near future. We are happy to work with CollegeXpress to bring more opportunities to families in need of scholarships and college information.“

“CollegeXpress is thrilled to be partnering with NHEG ” said Megan Gibbs, AVP, CollegeXpress & Director of Marketing. “We hope to be an extension of NHEG’s offerings as students in their program begin their college search, providing true connections between their students and schools.” Families interested in this scholarship and college information can visit https://School.NewHeightsEducation.org/students/scholarship-opportunities/scholarship-search/.

The post Partnership with CollegeXpress first appeared on New Heights Educational Group, Inc..

The post Partnership with CollegeXpress appeared first on New Heights Educational Group, Inc..

How can Pokemon TCG be educational for kids? Can adults play the game? What is the negative side of playing this game? This article will explain the basics of what the game is and how it can be an educational tool.

What is Pokemon TCG? TCG is short for trading card game. The game became quite popular in the late 90s. I was still a kid in elementary school, but during that time, I remember the game being introduced when Pokemon began airing on television.

Pokemon TCG is a two-player game but it can also be a battle between four players. It involves a 60-card deck; imagine a 52-card deck but with Pokemon cards. It’s a strategic and critical thinking game that involves getting the right cards in your deck to beat your opponents, and it may seem very complex if one doesn’t know how to play.

The Pokemon TCG Teaches Education

Math – Kids will learn basic math while adding or subtracting the health points of their Pokemon during the game.

Reading – There are going to be some hard words on the Pokemon cards and kids might have trouble pronouncing them at first.

Cognitive Skills – There needs to be a total of 60 cards in a deck and kids have to learn getting the right cards in your deck to beat your opponents.

Competition – Kids will learn that they can’t win the game all the time and that they have to accept that winning isn’t everything.

Researching – researching a specific card online.

Selling – selling cards to a player or online like amazon.

Pokemon TCG for Adults

It’s harder for adults to find peers who play the card game of Pokemon. Here are some tips and advice for adults:

Look for a store that sells Pokemon trading cards and see if they host a tournament for adults.

Invite your friends who play Pokemon TCG, and if you don’t have any friends who play, introduce them to the game.

You can go online and install the Pokemon TCG for the computer to play with someone online: Pokemon TCG Online

Top Issues With Pokemon TCG

There aren’t many kids or adults that plays the game.

Stealing: This issue is not included in the above link, but when Pokemon became a popular hit, there was a lot of stealing in school when kids brought their cards in hoping to trade or battle.

Older cards are worthless because the game has been updated over many years now.

Limitation: Certain cards are forbidden in a tournament like the old sets.

Is it easy for anyone to play the game? I think Pokemon TCG is easier to play than Magic the Gathering, Yu-gi-oh or many other card games. Pokemon TCG is still strategic and requires critical thinking, but Pokemon is more fun to play, I think. Learning to play it will take a few days. I started playing the game because I saw some of my classmates playing the game in school. I was watching them play and a few days later, I bought some cards and began collecting since I watch the anime. I wasn’t really good at the game, and I just collect the cards.

Anyone can play the card game; it isn’t just for kids. It’s more of a learning tool for kids as they can try and read hard words, do basic math, and practice strategic & critical thinking. Not only that but they can do research on a certain card if they want to trade or even start selling at a young age. The game is helpful to kids who are interested in Pokemon, while for adults, it’s a way of either having fun or trying to gain profit from certain cards.

What are the benefits of entering a chat room? What can a parent do if a child uses a chatroom? Chat rooms can be a great place to go to if one is being homeschooled or trying to make friends. This article will give advice to parents and guardians of the children who wants to use chat rooms.

Advice for parents or guardians:

Give rules – set a time limit for kids to be on the computer.

Place the computer where you can see what they’re looking at.

Look into what chat room the kids will be using.

Browse the chat room ahead of time.

Parents and guardians should always look out for what their kids are doing on the computer. For children, there are also some safety tips:

Carefully chose what nickname you want – nothing too near your rear name. For instance, if your name is Kathryn, use something like Bethany or Lisa. Just make up a name if you don’t want anyone in the chat room to know your identity.

Don’t give out sensitive information – email, address, school, etc.

If you don’t know much about computers, you can always ask a parent or guardian to help you with logging into the chat room.

Don’t hurt others if you don’t want to be hurt back.

Here are some helpful websites where children can go before heading into the chat room:

Electronics are now becoming an everyday thing for kids of every age. Parents can’t stop kids on being on the computer or phone whenever they’re not in plain sight. All parents can do is give advice to kids to protect their safety. Try not to be too obvious about snooping around; ideally, kids should always talk to an adult or guardian before heading into the chat room because you can’t ever know who is on the other side. If the adult still has concerns about the chat rooms, he/she can go and check the chat rooms that the kids want to go to.

Bring your class on Friday, Oct. 19, to the Allen County Fairgrounds (Ft. Wayne) for our FREE SCHOOL DAY! This event is sponsored by the Three Rivers Gem and Mineral Society. This year’s show theme is “GEODES – The Beauty Inside”. In addition to displays, classes will have the chance to see and touch many kinds of rocks, minerals and fossils, watch lapidary demonstrations, learn about dinosaurs, walk through a fluorescent mineral display, discover the floating rock, test mineral hardness, and much more. The field trip is free but by appointment only. We must schedule classes to avoid congestion. The School field trip time is from 12:45 to 2:45. Register by contacting Michele Yamanaka (contact information at bottom of page) with your school name, teacher name(s), number of children, preferred arrival time, email and phone number. Michele will give you a confirming email message.

Additional details:

Every student will receive a free mineral specimen.

We provide educational resources for each teacher to help teach Earth Sciences based on our show theme, which this year is “GEODES – The Beauty Inside”.

We provide a “treasure hunt” which helps students learn more about earth sciences while on the field trip because they look for answers to the Treasure Hunt questions. If the Treasure Hunt is answered correctly, teachers will receive an additional free specimen to award the students.

There will be a “Touch and Feel” area and an interactive Moh’s Scale of Hardness display.

We recommend allowing 2 hours at the fairgrounds for the trip.

Appointments will be set up beginning at 12:45 pm and running through 2:45 PM. Those at 2:45 will have until 4:45 to finish their visit. We will try to schedule arrival times at 15 minute intervals. Sign up early to get your choice of times.

School Day is a free event which is part of our 57th show which runs from Oct. 19-21 and is only offered to schools. Regular admission applies to the general public.

Students are allowed to buy specimens for their own collections. We will have $1 grab bags which contain 8 identified specimens in each and many of the dealers will have inexpensive specimens also.

Students should stay with their adults at all times.

We will provide additional information to classes after a trip time is assigned.

If you are interested in setting up a field trip, please contact Michele Yamanaka at Yamanakam@cs.com or phone 427-2196 (work). Oct. 5 is the deadline for registering for a field trip.

Letter to the NHEG Volunteers from Pamela Clark – Executive Director

Dear Volunteers,

NHEG has just rounded up another year of tremendous progress because of your dedication and hard work. I want to personally thank you all for everything and attaching your certificates of recognition. We didn’t receive a grant this year to cover the recognition day, so I’m sending you each the certificates via email. You can print these at home and frame, but I recommend that you send them to your local printing store. I further suggest that you ask that they print on a nicer stock, like 110lb cardstock for a higher quality image.

Thank you again for all you do.

Sincerely,

Pamela Clark
