Allen County Fairgrounds- Free Science Class Field Trip

 In Education News

Bring your class on Friday, Oct. 19, to the Allen County Fairgrounds (Ft. Wayne) for our FREE SCHOOL DAY!  This event is sponsored by the Three Rivers Gem and Mineral Society. This year’s show theme is “GEODES – The Beauty Inside”. In addition to displays, classes will have the chance to see and touch many kinds of rocks, minerals and fossils, watch lapidary demonstrations, learn about dinosaurs, walk through a fluorescent mineral display, discover the floating rock, test mineral hardness, and much more. The field trip is free but by appointment only. We must schedule classes to avoid congestion. The School field trip time is from 12:45 to 2:45. Register by contacting Michele Yamanaka (contact information at bottom of page) with your school name, teacher name(s), number of children, preferred arrival time, email and phone number. Michele will give you a confirming email message.

Additional details:

  • Every student will receive a free mineral specimen.
  • We provide educational resources for each teacher to help teach Earth Sciences based on our show theme, which this year is “GEODES – The Beauty Inside”.
  • We provide a “treasure hunt” which helps students learn more about earth sciences while on the field trip because they look for answers to the Treasure Hunt questions. If the Treasure Hunt is answered correctly, teachers will receive an additional free specimen to award the students.
  • There will be a “Touch and Feel” area and an interactive Moh’s Scale of Hardness display.
  • We recommend allowing 2 hours at the fairgrounds for the trip.
  • Appointments will be set up beginning at 12:45 pm and running through 2:45 PM. Those at 2:45 will have until 4:45 to finish their visit. We will try to schedule arrival times at 15 minute intervals. Sign up early to get your choice of times.
  • School Day is a free event which is part of our 57th show which runs from Oct. 19-21 and is only offered to schools. Regular admission applies to the general public.
  • Students are allowed to buy specimens for their own collections. We will have $1 grab bags which contain 8 identified specimens in each and many of the dealers will have inexpensive specimens also.
  • Students should stay with their adults at all times.
  • We will provide additional information to classes after a trip time is assigned.

If you are interested in setting up a field trip, please contact Michele Yamanaka at Yamanakam@cs.com or phone 427-2196 (work). Oct. 5 is the deadline for registering for a field trip.
