Making Writing Interesting For Students

 In Educational Articles

Writing courses can become boring for students who are taking the class, especially for those who aren’t interested in writing. What should teachers do then to help their students? Writing isn’t for everyone. Teachers must remember that not every student enjoys writing, and some of them don’t know how to express themselves with the written word. As teachers, how can you help them? Here are some helpful tips on how to interact with your writing-hate students.

For those teachers who are teaching students with disabilities, you can check this website: “Loops and Other Groups A Kinesthetic Writing System.” The price may be hefty, but it will certainly help a disability student with writing to make it more interesting. Loops and Other Groups has books from second grade until high school; $80 for a curriculum for all students is much more affordable then purchasing a new curriculum every year.

There’s also some websites that gives advices: “How To: Accommodate Students With Writing Disabilities” tells people like: making an outline, break writing assignments, work on one paragraph at a time…etc. You must be patient with disability students that needs help in writing. For Kinesthetic Learning, there are other ways where teachings could help someone that has kinesthetic: “kinesthetic learners can benefit from putting on paper words and images” according to the article, “Kinesthetic Learning Strategies.” Another idea for kinesthetic is probably using  the computer to write, talk about the plan for writing while you’re walking these two ideas were seen in the website of “Encouraging Kinesthetic Learners to Read and Write.”

If you aren’t working with disability students that needs help in writing, consider some other facts that may help a student be interested. For instances, the website: “12 Simple Tricks To Make Writing Fun” suggests to give creative inspiration, show them off, make it real life, have fun teaching writing…etc. These are very helpful to a teacher that needs advice on helping kids in need of writing.

I have some helpful advice if needed:

  • Instead of using paper and pen, why not use the computer if the classroom has one? Kids these days are heavily into electronics and they could use Microsoft Word or Google Docs for those who know how to type.
  • If it’s on an certain essay, make the topics more interesting. For instances, what is the theme for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? Or if it’s like an argumentative essay, what is the difference between anime and cartoon?
  • Try asking the kids on what they want to write and have a vote on the topics – be creative.

Writing could be hard for some kids in different ages. Think about what you did back then and how you were able to overcome on writing in a way that made it easier for you. Think about questions on trying to be fun for the students. What should I do to make it more interesting? What sort of topics would I write about? What are some stuff that kids today are more interested now to write? Integrate those answers into topics that could be written for the curriculum so that writing could be fun for the kids.

There are many helpful websites that teachers could look for online. The website titled: “25 Ways to Make Writing Fun” has loads of ideas where it suggested: give them the freedom, treat them as a “real” author, give them an audience for their writing…etc. Google website is where you could find websites that you need help for making writing interesting. Many websites have helpful hints and ideas where one teacher could benefit from.

In conclusion, writing isn’t easy for everyone. Making it fun and interesting for different kids could be creative and imaginative. It takes time to plan on what to write, try to plan ahead before the actual writing assignment starts. Topics shouldn’t be boring, try to integrate into something that kids like these days. Think of questions on what you would do in this era if you were a kid and how you would write the topic. Writing isn’t for everyone so be patient as you teach students that are in need of help. Writing should be fun and not boring!
